More information about Chardham Yatra

Char Dham, among the holiest of Hindu Pilgrimages, beckon the religious and spiritually inclined every year.

Situated in the lofty peaks of the majestic Himalayas in Utrakhand are the four most holy pilgrimages of India, jointly referred to as Char Dham (or four pilgrimage centres) of Hinduism. Through each of these ancient shrines meanders the Ganga around which several mythological legends have been wove.

According to popular belief, goddess Ganga took the form of river to support file on earth and is the most worshipped deity in the Hindu religion. The four dhams receive their holy waters in the form of rivers - Yamuna in Yamunotri, Bhagirathi in Gangotri, Mandakini in Kedarnath and Alaknanda in badrinath. The yatra or journey traditionally begins from the west and proceeds to the east. The starting point is Yamunotri. The route proceeds to Gangotri and finally culminates at Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna river, emerges from a frozen lake of ice and glaciers on the Kalinda parvat. It is the first stopover of the char dham pilgrimage. A temple dedicated to goddess Yamuna is located on the left bank of the river. Between May and October a large number of devotees visit the shrine. Yamunotri finds special mention in Hindu mythology as the home of Asit Muni, an ancient sage. Hot water springs are also a huge draw here. A trek to yamunotri against the backdrop of spectacular peaks and dense forests is an awesome experience.

With Yamunotri as your base, you can travel to Lakhamandal where the Kauravas are reported to have built a shelter to burn the Pandavas alive. Then there is Surya Kund known for its thermal springs where pilgrims cook rice and potatoes to offer the deity.

Along the right bank of Bhagirathi is the shrine of Gangotri dedicated to goddess Ganga. According to mythology, Ganga, daughter of heaven, took the form of a river to absolve the sins of king Bhagirath's predecessors. Lord Shiva received the goddess in his matted hair to minimize the impact of her fall. She came to be known as Bhagirathi at her legendary source. According to another legend, the Pandavas performed the deva yagna at this spot to atone the deaths of their kinsmen in the epic battle of Mahabharata.

By November the region is covered with snow. It is believed that the goddess retreats to Mukhba, her winter abode, 12 kms downstream. Gaumukh, the actual source of the river, is at the base of the Bhagirathi peaks. Several pilgrims travel to Gaumukh ton offer prayers. The verdant valleys and awesome peaks offer excellent trekking opportunities.

Located at the head of the river Mandakini, the Kedarnath shrine is amongst the holiest pilgrimages of the Hindus. The origin of th temple here can be traced to the Mahabharata. Legend has it that when the Pandavas sought the blessings of Lord Shiva, he continued to elude them. While fleeing, he took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. Since he was being followed, he dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface. This protrusion is worshipped as the idol in the shrine. The symbolic remaining portions of Shiva are worshipped at four spots - Tungnath, Rudranath, Madmaheshwar and Kalpeshwar.

The present temple was built in the 8th century by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. It lies adjacent to the site of an ancient temple built by the Pandavas. The walls are adorned with figures of deities and scenes from mythological tales. Behind the Kedarnath temple lies the Samadhi of Adi Guru Shankaracharya.

Badrinath, the holiest of the four main shrines, is cradled in the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges. Located along the left bank of the river Alaknanda. Badrinath is an important destination for every devout Hindu. According to legend, when Ganga was requested to come down to earth to ease the suffering of mankind, the earth was unable to withstand the force of her descent. The river was split into 12 channels, with Alaknanda becoming the abode of Vishnu or Badrinath.
